Broadway Jazz Festival History
The Broadway Jazz Festivals began as a benefit for Mt. Pleasant's 1920's Broadway Theatre.  The inaugural event was held in the summer of 2001, hosted by
CMU Public Radio's Jamie Lynn Gilbert featuring the bands Central Avenue, The Banana Cream Five, Central Wails, 5 Minus 1, and the Bird of Paradise Orchestra.

Marcus Belgrave's Tribute to Louis Armstrong
Marcus Belgrave and this world-class octet perform Louis Armstrong 's classic masterpieces; Hot 5, Hot 7 and 1930's Decca recording solos and arrangments in America's most exciting and loving tribute to Satchmo. This octet includes bassist Paul Keller, drummer Pete Siers, Hugh Leal, Charlie Gabriel, Chris Smith and more players familiar to fans throughout Michigan and far beyond.

Marcus Belgrave
Woody Shaw once called Marcus Belgrave the greatest living trumpet player in jazz. Charles Mingus said if he could get Marcus Belgrave to New York, ''I'd have the best and in the world.'' As a teenager, Belgrave recorded and toured with Ray Charles. An original member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Belgrave's protoges include Kenny Garret, Geri Allen, James Carter, Bob Hurst, Rodney Whittaker, Regina Carter, and many others.

Faruq Z. Bey and the Northwoods Improvisers
The Northwoods Improvisers blend elements of Jazz, East Indian, Native American and other forms of traditional folk music using  instruments of different cultures and homemade instruments. Mike Johnston, Mike Gilmore and Nick Ashton will appear with Faruq Z. Bey, founder of the seminal creative Detroit based jazz ensemble Griot Galaxy, whose Cd Opus Crampus earned international acclaim. Faruq is also a published poet and is a member of the Detroit based ensemble Speaking in Tongues.
